History

In 1969, a group of citizens representing the Orangeburg community along with various organizations formed the Orangeburg County Consumer Health Council. Their principle objective was to determine the need for health care in rural Orangeburg County.

In 1970, the Orangeburg County Consumer Health Council received money from individuals in the community, a grant in the amount of $35,000 from the Department of Health Education and Welfare, and $3,000 from the Urban Coalition to assist in the coordination of the health center.

In 1972, the Orangeburg County Consumer Health Council received their initial grant to develop an outpatient care facility. The health council received their charter in 1972 and, in 1982, changed the name to Family Health Centers, Inc.
